How to Choose the Right Book for Your Level

Not sure where to start? Here’s a simple test: open any book from the list and read the first page. If you understand 80% or more without a dictionary, the book is right for you. If you need to look up every other word, try an easier level. If it feels too easy, move up.

Start with A1–A2 books if you know fewer than 1,000 English words. Move to B1–B2 books when you can comfortably read A2 texts and understand most everyday conversations.

How to Read English Books Effectively

Reading is powerful, but how you read matters:

1. Don’t use a dictionary for every word. Try to guess the meaning from the context first. Only look up words that appear many times or block your understanding.

2. Read every day, even for 10 minutes. Short daily reading sessions are better than one long session per week. Consistency builds fluency.

3. Read aloud sometimes. This improves your pronunciation and speaking confidence at the same time.

4. Keep a vocabulary notebook. Write down 5 new words from each reading session. Review them before your next session.

5. Re-read your favorites. Reading the same story twice helps you notice grammar patterns and remember vocabulary better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these PDF books free to download?
Yes. All the books on this page are free to download and read. They are either in the public domain or simplified educational editions made available for English learners.

What level should I start with?
If you’re a complete beginner (A1), start with “Girl Meets Boy” or “Brown Eyes.” If you already know basic English (A2), try “The Little Prince” or “Tom Sawyer.” For intermediate learners (B1–B2), “Alice in Wonderland” or “Agatha Christie” are great choices.

Can I read these books on my phone?
Yes. All PDFs can be opened on any smartphone, tablet, laptop, or e-reader. You don’t need a special app — just a PDF reader.

How many books should I read per month?
For beginners, try to finish 1–2 short books per month. For intermediate learners, aim for 2–3 books. The key is consistency — reading a little every day is better than reading a lot once a week.

Will reading books actually improve my English?
Absolutely. Reading exposes you to natural sentence structures, new vocabulary in context, and correct grammar — all without memorizing rules. Many successful English learners say reading was the single most helpful thing they did.
