Comparative and Superlative Adjectives List + PDF

When we compare things, we use comparative and superlative forms of adjectives. In other words, comparative adjectives are used in sentences in which two nouns are compared.

Comparative adjectives compare two things and are usually formed by adding “-er” to the end of the adjective or using “more” before the adjective. For example, “taller” and “more interesting.” Superlative adjectives compare three or more things and are typically formed by adding “-est” to the end of the adjective or using “most” before the adjective, such as “tallest” and “most interesting.” Some adjectives have irregular forms, like “good” (comparative: “better,” superlative: “best”).

How to Form the Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

For one-syllable adjectives, we form comparative adjectives by adding -er, and superlatives by adding -est.

For two-syllables adjectives, we form comparative adjectives by adding -er, or “more”. We form superlatives adjectives by adding -est, or “most”.

For three-or-more-syllable adjectives, we form comparative adjectives by preceding the adjectives with “more” and superlatives by preceding the adjectives with “most”.
